The House of Lords has just blocked government plans to force pension funds to invest in UK assets, but many other pension reforms that have been approved could impact your eligibility and future pension value.
The good news is that there are solutions and opportunities to protect your hard-earned retirement savings.
What are the new pension rules?
• From April 2026, the state pension increase could push pensioners over the income tax threshold. Meaning some will start paying tax.
• Pensions will no longer be exempt from inheritance tax (April 2027), meaning pension pots passed on could face a 40% tax.
Significant changes to the UK State Pension will affect British nationals living overseas, particularly those making voluntary National Insurance contributions.
• Cheap Class 2 contributions scrapped
• Only Class 3 (more expensive) allowed
• Stricter eligibility (e.g. 10 years UK connection)
This makes maintaining a UK state pension from overseas harder and costlier.
The structural overhaul of how pensions are managed and invested, and eligibility requirements, could have a major impact on future pension values.

Apple saw a 23% jump in smartphone sales in China this year, despite other smartphone manufacturers raising prices due to higher costs of memory chips.
China’s overall smartphone market fell 4% this year to date, even with government subsidies issued earlier this year to revive consumer spending. Apple achieved this through e-commerce discounts and state subsidies on the base iPhone 17 model.
Their supply chain efficiency leaves Apple in a better position than its competitors to absorb some of the rising costs and keep its prices the same. This will allow Apple to focus on potentially expanding its market share.
