Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi has launched a new electric SUV, and debuted a self-designed smartphone chip to expand beyond budget phones.

The Xring O1 is a 3-nanometer mobile chip meant to compete with chips powering Apple and Qualcomm’s top-tier phones. The launch event, where Xiaomi celebrated its 15th anniversary with an image reinvention, also introduced a new tablet.

This comes as Xiaomi is pushing a multi-pronged expansion into electric vehicles and chips as it seeks to break China’s dependence on foreign technology.

The YU7 SUV will be available in July and offer a range of up to 835km on a single charge, along with a 0-100km acceleration in just over 3 seconds. This competes directly with Tesla’s Y model and Porsche’s equivalent. The advanced model will also come with advanced driving assistance software.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, is also pushing semiconductors with a $1.87 billion investment in the Xring O1 with production at the world’s largest chip maker TSMC.
